Jesus Christ is the Central Person of the Bible. With a Personage whose Very Character is perfection, whose Very Power is inexhaustible, whose Very Being is eternal and whose Very Presence is limitless, whose Very Knowledge is immense, with such a One it would be unimaginable to think that He would not be present and active in the Old Testament. But some have postulated this unthinkable idea. You may hear them say, “You can’t find the name Jesus in the Old Testament.” That is what will be addressed in brief today.
18: Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
19: Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.
20: But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
21: And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
22: Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
23: Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
26: And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27: To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
28: And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
29: And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
30: And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31: And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
32: He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
Would the Angel speaking to a Jews that speak Hebrew have spoken to them in Greek. Of course not he would speak in a language that was native to them. He spoke Hebrew.
In the Old Testament there are several words that are translated to the English word “salvation”. One of these original Hebrew words is the Hebrew name of Jesus, which is Yeshuwah, Yeshuwah.
The Pre-Existent Person of Christ
If Christ is who the New Testament claims He is:
(Jesus is Emmanuel, which means God with us.)
1. Is He in the Old Testament?
2. What did He do in Old Testament Times?
3. How does this enrich present day understanding of who the Savior is?
The following terms also imply Jesus Christ also.
These are terms that can apply to the Divine Personage in the Divinity’s full being.
Why is Lord in all caps occasionally in scripture?
This is known as the “Tetragrammatron”. It is a Greek word that simply means “4 letters”. When you see the word spelled, “LORD” it is the proper name of God. It is the four large Hebrew letters for the name of God given in Exodus 6:3. The word is actually YHWH not Jehovah but Yahwah, Yahweh or Yahvah, Yahveh. The true pronouncement of the name is lost.
EXODUS 6:1: Then the LORD said unto Moses, Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh: for with a strong hand shall he let them go, and with a strong hand shall he drive them out of his land. EXODUS 6:2: And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the LORD: EXODUS 6:3: And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name YHWH was I not known to them.
EXODUS 23:20: Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. EXODUS 23:21: Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him.
(* Notice that YHWH or YHWH,, which is the personal and sacred name of God is in his name.)
YESHUWAH AS THE ANGEL OF THE LORD
The Warrior Prince Angel of the Lord
Every Time the Angel of the Lord is seen as leading the angelic host into battle, preparing to lead the host, wrestling with a person, or heralding the birth of a warrior in Israel it appears to be an appearance of Christ in his pre-incarnate form.
All the other times it appears to be the Holy Spirit. God the Father never appears in this form.

WHO IS IT?
• The Divine Being that appeared to Abraham, wrestled with Jacob, in a bush that was on fire that did not burn, was in the pillar that guided the children of Israel, stood against Balaam, told Joshua to take off his shoes, promised Joshua he would be a covenant-keeper , pick Judges for Israel, held the destroyer, fed prophets, sent prophets, inspired Psalms, smote the enemy, and stood by the high Priest as Satan stood against him.
IT IS YESHUWAH!
AN ENCOUNTER WITH SCRIPTURE
THE ROCK IN THE WILDERNESS
Everyone knows the account of Exodus 17 when water was brought from a rock. This impressive encounter with incalculable power of the LORD is truly awe-inspiring. The massive boulder, almost six stories in height, split in two as water exploded from it midst. (Interesting Point: When Christ returns, His feet shall touch Mount Olives and it shall split open and wate shall run out of it.) Then there is the account of Numbers 20 when Moses was told the speak to that rock and instead he smote it. This disobedience brought the judgement of God as he was denied access to the Promise Land. Deuteronomy 32 has Moses writing about that rock. He personifies the Rock. Deut:32:15: But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation. Salvation used in this verse is the Hebrew word “Yeshuwah” The Christian knows who this rock is. Paul said, “And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. 1Cor:10:4”
